The not-so-secret Secret U.S. War in Pakistan continues

A U.S. drone strike in northwest Pakistan may have killed a senior leader of al Qaeda but details are still emerging, a U.S. government official said on Friday.

The figure killed was not believed to be either al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden or his No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahri, U.S. officials said.

The strike, which took place sometime in the past week, is part of a stepped-up campaign using pilotless drone aircraft against targets in Pakistan. Pakistan officially objects to these U.S. strikes.

Of this undeclared war in Pakistan, Jane Mayer wrote in The New Yorker: “The embrace of the Predator program has occurred with remarkably little public discussion. … Due to the C.I.A. program’s secrecy, there is no visible system of accountability in place, despite the fact that the agency has killed many civilians inside [Pakistan] a politically fragile, nuclear-armed country with which the U.S. is not at war.”
