Cost of Wars in Afghanistan Pakistan and Iraq reach 3.7 Trillion Dollars

Linda Bilmes, an economist at Harvard University, said: “We have borrowed virtually all of the money that has been used to pay for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and that has been very expensive, adding at least $1.5 trillion to our national debt.”

Even just paying the interest on the United States’ war debt is a large endeavor, at a time when the country is set to exceed its current debt limit of over $14 trillion.

The government has already paid about $185 billion in interest on war spending, and could accrue another $1 trillion in interest by 2020 — an amount not included in the $3.7 trillion estimate that the wars in Afghanistan Pakistan and Iraq cost.

Now the country is at a decision point, aligned with the current showdown over a deal to raise the debt ceiling by August.
